~Ten Years Prior to the RP, five years prior to the events of FFVII~
"Synen, honey, come on down. It's time to wake up. You've got to get ready to go and help your father at work sweetie!"
The soft and kind voice of the young boy's mother called up to him, reaching him in his room and waking him from his short
night's sleep.
Yawning, he got out of bed and got ready for the day, putting on his usual clothes. He carefully stepped over the open
books laying on the floor of his room. Brushing his hair back neatly he made his way downstairs and smiled to his mom.
"Alright mom, I'm up." Giving another yawn he gently put his glasses on and looked up to the tall brunette who stood in
her apron, hands on her hips as she gave him the look he saw every morning.
With a huff, she shook her head. "You were up all night reading all those books of yours, weren't you? Really now, I don't
see why you think it's so important to read all those books when they're all above your level."
"But mom I-"
"No buts! Your father has worked for the Shinra company since he was only a few years older than you, and through all
this time he's managed to get up in the company and even got us out of those slums. You should take him as an example
young man. You're a fine, physically fit young man and you can make it fine in the world with just that." Finally, after
scolding the young boy she shook her head once more and ruffled his hair lightly. "Just be careful not to stay up too late
again, it'll weaken your body where you can't do anything and that's something you can't risk, alright?"
With a small groan the young Synen looked up into his mother's eyes and smiled. "I know mom, but I just find the books so
interesting. Still, I'll try my best to get better sleep from now on, I promise."
"Uh-huh, just like you promised the last time. Fine fine, hurry up or you'll miss your father's train." She smiled as she handed him two bags with food in them. "Those are yours and your father's lunches. Go on and take them with you and I'll see you two tonight when you get home with your father."
Synen smiled lightly before waving to her as he ran off to get to the nearby train platform by his house. Looking up at the sky, he sighed and shook his head a little. "Too bad others can't get a lucky break and get out from the slums. Been living up here since I was ten and I still can't get over how beautiful the sky really is. I'll figure something out, those books could really prove to helping out everyone down there." Continuing on his path, he smiled lightly getting to the platform.
Getting on the train he smiled as he went to the front car and waved the black-haired guard stationed there. "Hey dad! Mom
had me bring you your lunch." Walking over he noticed there were many men in business suits, all of them looking very important. Synen was always so proud of his father, even when he worked as just a normal low class guard on the trains down
in the slums. Now his father was working on the trains on the surface, protecting such important people. People that could,
that would save so many people one day with their knowledge.
Finding an empty seat, he sat down and talked with his father of how again, his mother was scolding him for staying up and reading the books he found so fascinating. His father shook his head a little and looked at him, though still keeping a close eye on all the important passangers he was to look after.
"You know son, your mother is right. If you were to quit staying up all night reading those books, you could already have a nice job. Even young kids like you could get jobs in Shinra, even if just a small one. Still, if you like reading so much, that's perfectly fine. Just promise me you'll quit worrying your mother so much, alright?" He gave a light chuckle as he once more scanned the car to make sure everything was fine.
The day continued wonderfully, the young boy and his father talking with each other throughout the day. Sitting out on the platform near the Shinra building as they ate their lunches. Synen laughing as he was told jokes by his father. Even meeting and talking to some interesting people.
Finally, it was getting late as the train began to pull into the station, he and his father getting ready to leave the train with the rest of the passengers when an alert came on over the intercom.
"ALL PASSENGERS PLEASE REMAIN CALM AND STAY SEATED. WE HAVE BEEN ASKED BY THE OFFICIALS TO KEEP ALL PASSENGERS ON THE TRAIN UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. I REPEAT; ALL PASSENGERS PLEASE REMAIN CALM AND STAY SEATED."
Synen and his father both looked to each other as the train suddenly rocked and a loud, muffled crackling noise could be
heard from where they were. "Dad, what's that noise?"
The other men and women in the car began to panic as Synen's father held out a hand, trying to calm everyone at once.
"Please, everyone, stay calm. Just give me a moment and I'll check." As he spoke he made his way to the door, the train
screeching loudly as it lurched, the opened door letting in smoke and ash as they could see several dead bodies in the
previous car, only a few men in dark blue suits standing over the bodies. It was a horrid sight, bodies covered in burns
and bullet wounds, their faces no longer recognizable.
"What is this?" The smell of burning flesh met Synen's nose as the smoke burned his eyes, slowly turning them red
as he could barely make out the three men standing there, his father's body partially blocking his view of the three men.
At the sight before them, the other passangers began to scream and yell, rushing for the door of the train, but they were
too late as the three men stood there, raising their guns and firing on their prey. The boy's father instantly jumped in
the way, taking the first barrage of bullets and protecting his son as well as an older man from death before falling to
the ground.
"Sy-...son, run, aw-" The trigger was pulled and Synen's father fell silent in front of his own eyes.
The sight before him along with the smoke caused the tears to pour forth from the young boy's eyes as he quickly tried to
run to the conductor's room, stumbling over the bodies as he soon heard the old man scream and beg for mercy before being
shot down like the rest. Managing to open the door, Synen's eyes widened when he saw there was no one there. Not a single
person. Someone had set it for the message to be relayed once they had hit that check point. They had been set up. Every
person on this train, this was all planned. But to kill who? Why? Who would do something so terrible?
Synen was shaken from his shock as he heard the movement of the men behind him, hearing a light mumble and seeing the
reflection of something glowing. Materia! Magic! Quickly Synen rolled, his leg singed by the burning flames of magic as he
managed to tumble out of the wreckage of the car. Pulling himself up, he made a dash for home, trying to ignore the pain in
his left leg.
He managed to smile through his sobs as he could make out the small house he and his family lived in so close to the train
platform. So lucky that they lived so close, that he could run home. "Mom! Mom! Dad was-! The train, and dad!" He couldn't
get a hold of his thoughts or his words as he stumbled forward, falling onto the steps leading into his house.
The door burst wide open as his mother came out, tears in her eyes as she knelt down and wrapped her arms around him,
sobbing. "Son! You're okay! Oh, thank you! Thank you!" They both cried, sobbed as the brunette held her son in her arms
until they heard the footsteps of the men as they came forward, another man in a white lab coat now standing with them.
The man in the white lab coat side as he took a few steps forward. "tsk tsk. Poor little boy, to get caught up in all of
this. For such misfortune to fall upon your family. And worse yet, for you to have brought this misfortune to your mother
as well. At least she would have been left alive, if only you hadn't managed to run all the way back."
Synen glared at the man, grittin his teeth as he stood up, protecting his mother. "No! No! What is this!? This is wrong!
Everything I heard about Shinra! They protect their people! Everything I read! Shinra's supposed to be looking to help all
of us survive, not murder us all!"
The three armed men began to aim their guns before the man in white waved his arms, making them lower their weapons once
more. "Now now little boy. You see, it isn't that we were murdering our own people. There were many evil men and women on
that train. They were part of this horrid organization named 'AVALANCHE'. They're very dangerous people and so we had to do
what was necessary. Your father knew the risks that came with his job, and I'm certain that he would be proud knowing that
he died for such a noble cause of protecting Shinra and all of Midgar's inhabitants."
Synen could hear his mother sobbing behind him, still on the ground. This was all too much for her, too much for him. It
didn't make sense. "Why my dad then!? Why those people!? They were innocent!"
Slowly, the man in the lab coat moved forward, coming closer to them. "Hm, you make a good point boy. How do you know? Well,
you're obviously a very brilliant boy. You seem to know quite a lot, and even managed to escape from trained soldiers. I'll
tell you what. You can come along with me to learn the truth, and if you do that, I'll even make sure you're mother is
protected from AVALANCHE. I'd say that's quite a fair deal, rather than these men simply pulling their triggers."
Looking back to his sobbing mother, Synen slowly nodded. "A-alright, if you really keep your promise I'll go with you. I'll
make sure that if what you say is true, AVALANCHE is destroyed for what they've caused." Looking back to the man, then back
to his mom he knelt down and hugged her. "I promise mom, I'll keep you safe. I will."
The scientist smiled as he adjusted his lab coat and motioned for the men and Synen to follow him, knowing that the boy
would make for an excellent test subject.
