I had a really hard time getting into XII to tell the truth, it's not that any part of the game was bad in my opinion. I loved the battle system and what I saw of the storyline but I just couldn't get myself to keep playing it, it just didn't feel right to me for some reason and I couldnt get into the characters which is really important to me.

Yeah I understand that, I really don't like the battle system in XIII and even the story is a bit plain but I love the characters so much it doesn't matter and I don't care that it's gonna take me at least ten more hours of solid grinding to max out my characters. I might give it another chance (when I steal by bf's brother's PS2) and if I really get angry at it I'll switch to X-2 or Dirge or Cerberus (which I haven't touched yet either).

To be honest, I don't care for spin-offs. I mean, don't get me wrong. I enjoyed Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus; however, I would rather Square-Enix spend more time creating new Final Fantasy games with new characters and such rather than recycling a series.
But, if I had to pick a spin-off... It would have to be the adventures of Don Corneo. Explaining what happened to him between Midgar and his downfall (literally speaking as well) in Wutai. <_<

More than a story-centric spin-off, I'd rather propose a change of gaming style. Maybe something strategic, along the lines of Risk. Now, which game?... Besides the classics, I guess VIII, IX, XI or XII would be the best choices.
