~Synen~
The young man slowly made his way into the large tower as he glanced around himself. His hands were in the pockets of his black slacks as the tails of his white lab coat flowed behind him.
He glances from side to side, briefly removing his right hand to brush a few strands of hair from his face before returning to his pocket. He walked over to a few shelves of books and began to skim over the titles.
"Origins of Magic, The Lost Ones, The True Power of Ultima..." He side as he hung his head in defeat. "Still nothing. The books are interesting, but nothing close to the power I'm looking for. Perhaps if I get to the top of the tower."
The young scientist gave a heavy breath as he pulled a small device from his pocket. Jinko-Mina was still where he had sent her. He wasn't worried about her being defeated, but he still planned to keep a close eye on her.
Pocketing the device he looked up from the ground, towards the ceiling of the well built building. Bring his hand to his face once more, he realigned his glasses before taking his time heading further up the tower.
OOC: Okay, sorry, realized this post wasn't going to work with using Mina, so i had to switch out who was here. Sorry for any and all confusion. ^^;'

~Synen~
The young doctor had made it about halfway up the tower by this time. He had looked over every item he could find and had continued to investigate the tower. Still, there had been nothing he could find that actually peaked his interest.
Finally he made it to the next floor and gave another sigh. This seemed to be the emptiest floor yet. "Hmph, for a tower that's supposed to be so important to this world, I'd expect there to be more to it than this." Making his way around one of the corners he saw that there was another dead end. "It's possible that the Merge is still too new to find much about it."
Giving a sigh he brushed his hand through his hair before removing the small tracking device from his pocket. Hm, seemed that his little girl was on his way back to their home. At least she'd have good news to report back to him.

“...spers,” Maria muttered, flipping through decrepit tomes, “Eidolons, Tote – totema? Hn. Aeons, Evocation, The Effects of Mako on the Mind, Life as a Darklord, The Chronicles of the Crysta – AHA!” The girl gave a small crow of triumph, believing to have found what she had spent the last four days searching for. At the third level of the tower, she'd held more than a moment of unease, walking through the scatterings of tomes and books, parchments and scrolls. She'd half-expected a gigas to pop out and look for a fight. As it was, the room was nearly unbearable with heat. Though the lava had long-since cooled and turned hard, there was still heavy, humid air in the room. The ever-lit fire from the torches weren't helping much either, but what could one do? It wasn't as if she could snap her fingers and make the tomes she searched for magically appear.
Or could she..?
“No,” she grinned, amused at her own thoughts, “Minwu would've scolded me for trying to use Teleport for that sort of benefit. Now, little book, what secrets do you hold~?” Maria thumbed through the bound hardcover, a frown deepening on her lips with every turn of a page. “The Wind Crystal,” she read aloud, “Shattered upon the death of the King Tycoon, later restored by Queen Lenna nee Reina Charlotte Tycoon after the sealing of Exdeath.
“Magicite,” Maria continued with growing interest despite the feeling that the read would lead to a nowhere she planned on going, “a substance that contains the remains of the creatures known as espers. Materia: Allows specific forms of magic to be used by its holder. Spheres: Spira's own design, allowing heightened physical and magical abilities, though in minor increments at a single time.
“Item synthesis is possible with certain crystals, though the most common sorts involve an enabling of mana or evocation.
“Beware the crystalbug, for its greatest weapon is deception.”
Crystalbug? What could that be? Maria sighed. Still nothing particularly useful for what she was looking for, but perhaps the queen could find a use for the tome. Narrowing her eyes down the corridor of ancient literature, something glaring caught Maria's interest. “A large... Hm. You'd be what I was looking for~” the girl stated in a sing-song voice. She reached out a hand toward the glowing petrification and suddenly jumped back.
The aura around the fossil stirred. It made noise! Jittery, insect-like noise. “Oh, crystalbug. Well, it makes sense now!” Wait. It was gathering mana in the air. Quickly. Too quickly. As the magic churned and Maria realized that the creature was intending to aim its assault at her, she followed her first instinct.
She ran. When an oversized icicle came hurtling her way, Maria followed her second instinct. “FIRAGA!”

Synen smirked as he could hear the young girl mumbling and reading to herself. He stayed silent, waiting outside the doorway to the room. He raised a hand, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead.
Something about a Minwu? Hmm, sounds like a man's name. Like he was important to her. And something about a King Tycoon and a Crystal of Wind? Crystals...he had read something about those before. Dark and Light Crystals? All these worlds, so many impressive and phenomenal creations.
He continued to listen, trying to learn all he could from the mutterings of the young girl. The young scientist had to thank the fact that she hadn't caught him as he had come up the flight of stairs. It seemed she was deep in thought of all these mysterious tomes.
"Damn," he mumbled to himself, being careful to make sure she would not hear him. "If only I had reached this floor first. Now she's going to be in my way. Hmm, maybe if I-" His words fell silent as he heard mention of Magicite, Spheres, and of course the Materia he was so well acquainted with.
Sighing, he let his head hang low as he slid his hand back into his pocket to pull out the tracking device, about to check on his little girl when he heard her state she found what she was looking for. Peaking around the corner he saw her running back to the doorway, a giant icicle flying their way as a giant ball of fire shot towards the 'Crystalbug'.
In an instant Synen jumped out, holding his hand foward he muttered a spell. "Enemy skill, Magic Missiles!" Aiming the spell carefully, he managed to send one of the blasts of magical energy at the icicle, the two spells destroying one another as the other two magical projectiles flew at the creature that was aiming to hurt the girl.
OOC: Mmkay, I hope this is okay and not too much or anything. ^^;

Half-expecting shrapnel from the explosion, Maria ducked the moment the blast occurred. Sliding in her crouch, she looked up to see a young man, curious expression on his face all while he projected a multitude of “magic missiles” toward the crystalbug. She rose to her feet with a languid motion, slightly dazed from the sound of the missiles meeting their designated target.
As the smoke cleared, Maria could see chips in the surface of the creature. Grinning to her last-minute savior, she formed another Firaga. Sending it off in a flurry, she realized that the room's heat was gaining in temperature. From her spells? It seemed likely. And when the level three grew hot enough, the Gigas...
Maria turned her eyes to the monster, though when she called out, the focus of her question was to the black-haired man. “Got anything that'll hit it harder? It's already cracking – a little more, and it should go down. But,” she added, features turning grim, “I may have compounded the situation.”
On cue, there was a rumble beneath the cooled magma. The floor began cracking in harsh indentions at Synen's feet. Around the crystalbug, too, deep crags began erupting. Well, drat.
Blinking, Maria remembered her surroundings. After seeing that the creature had turned its attention to the missiles that ravaged it, the violet-haired mage dove toward the archives of tomes, scouring them for any sort of ice spell. Ice One, Blizzard, Blizzara – even a Water might help against what was on the rise.
((Ditto to you, Mr. Modpants. :3 If anything needs changing, say the word~))

Synen rose his arm to protect his eyes as the blasts of magic blasted into the attacker. As he lowered his arm he saw the girl moving, and noticed the heat rising as well. Damn, not a good sign. Hm, not good at all. The creature was harder than he had expected.
He suddenly felt his footing begin to give way and glanced down, seeing what the young girl had seen, the floor was crumbling beneath him and the creature.
Another spell? Something better? At the same time, he saw the purple-haired girl dive into the room of books. What was she thinking? Certainly he was a scientist and knew the fascinations of reading, but was this really the time?
As if to answer his own thoughts, he was brought back to what was happening as another large icicle came flying from the Crystalbug. Ducking underneath it, his mind ran through the different enemy skills he had learned through his tests. It wasn't the strongest enemy skill he had managed to learn, but perhaps this wasn't the time to worry about power after all.
Quickly standing, he aimed his palm at his target. Just as he was about to cast the ability Aqualung, he caught himself. "The only other spell I can use would damage all these tomes beyond recognition." The young scientist stayed calm. He wanted to see what the girl was capable of.
OOC: Btw, it was Matra Magic, not Magic Missile. My mistake. ^^;

((Eh, close enough. )) “I'd wager our lives are more important than the tomes – there have to be other archives around. AHA!” Maria crowed as she acquired her papered target. “Magic Skill: Ice, level two. Focus equal moderate levels of concentration, mana, and will while forming the imagery of chilling weather in the mind. Complete spell with the following hand motions, and say,” and here, Maria made a swished motion with her right hand as the left held the book tight, “Blizzara!” Frost formed instantly around her hand, and without warning, a pummeling of hail lurched toward the crystalbug, smacking the surface of the creature in dense crackles. “A-hah!” Maria had the mind to keep the tome on hand for a further, more complete learning – assuming they survived what would come next. As the crystalbug shuddered and the magic-heavy air around it went still, Maria narrowed her eyes toward the crags of the stone floor. Heat wafted from the cracks, and the low rumbling from before turned into a vibrant, thrumming beat. Beneath her, she could feel the floor tremble, and at the corner of her eye, books began to fall from their shelves. “Gigas,” she whispered.

Synen gave a small sigh before looking back to the young magic user. Though he looked back at her, he too noticed the floor was trembling only further. He knew better than to lose his calm though as he gave a playful smirk, sliding his glasses up his nose with his middle finger. "I must say, that was quite impressive. So adept with Magic that you have the ability to learn a magic so quickly, even in the middle of a battle."
His smirk grew to a light smile as he could feel the, what was it she called it, Gigas? Yes, the Gigas, he could feel it coming closer to them. He knew this place was famous in this world, and she certainly seemed to know a great deal about it. It only made sense that she should be from this world, as even he had not found out this much information yet after such thorough investigation.
Looking around, he knew there were only two directions to go. Back down the way he had gotten here, or higher up the tower. Either way, they would be spotted by the Gigas. "You must really be quite the young scholar, to be in here facing such dangers on your own." As he spoke he took a few steps back from the staircase he had come from, watching the floor as it continued to shake and tremble, as if the entire tower was upset with their trespassing.

“Dastard!” Maria shouted at the retreating figure. What sort of man would leave a woman virtually defenseless against the Gigas? She wasn't nearly proficient enough to go against the monster on her own – magic tomes were hardly the most comprehensible things to read!
She didn't have long to rue the man's existence, for the Gigas erupted from the flooring in hideous form and raging bellow. It lurched forward in heavyset, lumbering clods. Groaning in its inarticulate language, the Gigas reached out a hand toward her and Maria could feel the oncoming heatstroke from her distance away. She ducked out of the way behind a series of bookshelves, barely in time to save her flesh from being seared off the bone as sulfur-scented hellfire blazed past. Behind her cowering, Maria could hear the crackling of burning parchment.
Coughing, she hunkered down and focused on a reprise of Blizzara. Beyond her hiding spot, she could hear the Gigas shift his weight across the floor. It wouldn't be long at all until he found her, and when he did, she doubted she'd be capable enough to fend off a secondary flaring.
((Hee. Dastard.))

OOC: Okay, two things to start. 1, I meant he was backing away from the stairs and the the crumbing floor, not running. But this still works. And second...lol Dastard. Synen smirked, hiding back as the large Gigas went direct after the young girl. Perfect, he figured the beast would go for the nearest target, thus leaving itself wide open to any attacks. Though he didn't care for the idea of showing one of his abilities to the girl, he figured now was the best time to attack. He narrowed his eyes d aimed for the back of the large beast. His black bangs fell in front of his face as the heat in the room grew with the presence of the beast. "Enemy Skill; Aqualung!" the materia on his wrist glew lightly from under the white sleeve of his labcoat as a wave of water shot out towards the Gigas' large, exposed back. "Now now dear, I would never leave a fine young lady such as you to fend for herself." OOC: ugh, short-ass post.

((Pff. S'not as if she knew that. )) Maria had expected death. The stifling heat from the gigas had been enough to succeed in nearly suffocating her, and she'd been certain that the creature would come at her a second time, ensuring her demise. Instead, she'd heard the commanding call of a mage in action. Without thinking, Maria focused all of her will into Ice and Wind. “Blizzara!” A snowstorm erupted from her direction, combining with the waves of water for an extended power. The gigas stumbled and fell, and Maria, despite the quickening feeling of physical drain that came along with the use of magic, brought her hands up once more. “Blizzara!” A strike of ice against the gigas' spine. “Blizzara!” Hail pelted at the creature's face, crunching against thick bone. “Blizzara!” Maria fell to her knees, wasted for the effort. The gigas? Bruised, battered, bloody, and in some regions it appeared as if frostbite was already setting in over its corpse. “Bleeding. Hell.” Maria panted. She felt ill enough to retch, between the heat of the hellfire and the shock of utter cold from the magic. She glared up at the man before her. “You could have said you were looking for an opening! I would've thought to play bait rather than be it!” Let it never be said that Maria of Fynn was ungrateful for military aid.

lol. I love your Maria...>.>..))
Synen watched in awe as he watched the young girl suddenly pelt the large creature with so many powerful ice spells. A slight smirk came across his face as his thoughts began to wonder, watching the bleeding beast, wondering if it knew better yet than to stand up. Certainly his spell had helped, but the power behind the girl's magic, not to mention her adept ability to learn it quite quickly was very impressive. No stone such as Materia or this 'Magicite' he had heard of was needed. Only a few words from something as simple as a book, and she ccould cause so much damage. He always had loved the amazing wonders of books, and now he could only grow further interested in these tomes.
"I'm sorry my dear, I understand if you're upset. But many beasts, like animals, can tell fear and thoughts of their so-called prey just through the simplest of actions. I could not explain to you, or else it may have given away the plan all together. I do hope you understand?" he gave a light smile as he looked her over. The exhaustion from the heat and the energy taken from her by the spells were very aparant. Still, better her than him.
Taking a moment, still keeping an eye on the beast he gave a small nod. The scientist couldn't have her not trusting him, not while this thing was still breathing. Once more, he concentraed before the small light began to shine from his wrist. "White Wind." He spoke the words smoothly a refreshing breeze blew through the room, the opened books pages fluttering with the cool wind as the heat began to die down, even if only a little.
"There, that should allow us to regain a little more composure." His eyes still fixated on the beast, he wasn't going to be the one to finish it entirely if he could help it.
Okay, so, White Wind heals HP and status ailments, so I figured this would be a decent and reasonable way of using it without it seeming overpowered? o.0))

Maria pulled herself into a proper sitting position as the man spoke, her scowl slowly dissolving. He had a point, she thought to herself. It was true that the gigas was a creature of instinct. If it had felt at all as if the tables had been turned on it, the monster would have just as easily torched the entire floor down as it would have run away. She blinked slowly, deciding the assuage her anger. “No, no. You're right. I... Well, in any case, I doubt it will rise again soon. The lava pits will keep it alive, but until it gets the strength to fall back into them, we should be safe.”
Despite her words, Maria was more than a mote unnerved at the beast's presence. If the gigas of fire existed once again, then what of its relations? Maria decided she'd rather not learn the fate of the gigas Ice or Thunder. She rose to her feet in a wavering motion, clearly exhausted by the effects of the fight. “Mysidian tower,” she spat, “It never ceases to annoy.”
Maria was nearly knocked over by the gentle waft of air that the stranger brought forth. As she rocked on the balls of her feet, a sudden refreshment fell over her. Gone was the sick feeling in her stomach, the ache in her head, and the exhaustion of power. “Still,” the girl began, feeling the chill of ice at her hand once more, “Its better to be safe than sorry. You bother me, Gigas. Every time I kill you, you come back.” The mageling stepped toward the hulking mass and crouched down to meet its massive head. “Mysidian tower is not yours and never will be yours. It is for Mysidia, and for those who crave knowledge. Not for brutes that rely on pain and death.” Without a moment's hesitation or remorse, Maria brought her hands to meet the beast's eye. It uttered a creeling, infantile moan. “Ice, level one. Blizzard.” An icicle formed in the span between the girl's hands and the gigas' eye. It soon found a new home within the creature's skull.
Maria rose from her hunkered position and wiped her hands at her sides, brushing flakes of frost off of her glove and bare hand. She extended the latter into the air between herself and her accomplice. “We weren't properly introduced. Maria of Fynn, advising mage to the Queen Hilda of Fynn.” Maria spoke with soft pride – her place as Hilda's aide meant more to her than she could ever express, nevermind that it was entirely likely the man before her had never heard of Fynn, much less its queen. “And you?”
((You know, while writing this I thought about a few things. Maria, assuming one went with default strategy, was a badass with magic. But, her MP was horrible compared to Minwu's. Add that she came equipped without a single tome makes me think I really want to restrict her abilities, in that she'll only be able to acquire new magic through the various FFII locations.
Also, after thinking about it, I doubt there'd've been any hesitation in killing that monster at all. I mean, it's tried to kill her twice now. Eff pity, ICE TO THE FACE.))

He smiled lightly as he watched her, pleased that she was willing to believe and even agree with his thoughts. He could tell she had had a bit of experience in fighting, as it was clearly present from the battle that had just occurred. He watched as she stood and the magical wind rushed through the room, before she gave her final comments to the Gigas. Quite an impressive young lady actually, showing no sign of mercy to something that clearly had anything close to an evolved mind.
Still, none of this mattered to him. The books, though some singed and others damp, were still for the most part still kept in tact, which meant that it would be easily possible for him to come back at a late date if need be.
Noticing the hand in front of him, Synen came back from his thoughts and gave the kind girl a gentle smile as he pushed his thin-rimmed glasses gently up his nose before gently taking her hand and giving a gentleman's bow, lowering his gaze toward the flooring beneath them.
"My, I see. A very fine woman, come from a very important land it would seem." An advising mage, it would make sense in explaining her impressive magical abilities. "I am but a humble scholar my dear. You may call me Synen." Looking over his glasses and into her eyes, his small smile showed as he gently kissed the top of her hand as he still held it.
You make some really good points. o.0 And yes, I don't know why, but I have been in a fully 'think Synen thoughts' mood, and I can just feel that this would be the path he would take...which worries me. >.> lol))

((...I'm really worried for Maria. D: ))
Maria felt her face heat at the man's gesture. It was true the stranger was handsome – more so than perhaps Firion – but she'd always ever been approached by pirate riff-raff and old, leering men. To have someone who was obviously kin to her in spellcasting and likely the same in literature comment on her fine points gave reason for stirrings she didn't quite understand. “Ah, th-thank you,” she hesitated, not at all expecting the gentleman's form from someone she'd just succeeded in battle with. When she caught a better look at his eyes after the frames on his face readjusted, she was struck with curiosity. Blue eyes, with such a strange speckling of green throughout. What was that, she wondered.
“Hello, Synen. I-is there something here you were looking for? Something I could help you with? The tower's hard to navigate on a good day, let alone with the remnants of Mateus' influence. I could help you, assuming you didn't need anything on this floor – we seem to have waterlogged everything that didn't begin crisping the minute that thing decided to rear its head.” Maria realized then that she was allowing herself to ramble. Blast it – she wasn't supposed to be the doe-eyed girl from Fynn! She was the advisor to the crown! To forget her rank and place on the whim of a measly hand kissing and bow...
Maria withdrew her hand. “What were you looking for, anyway?”
