Special Skill(s): Tools - One of Edgar's main hobbies is also one of his greatest weapons. Using various tools at his disposal, he dispatches enemies. All of these weapons are unblockable. The following is a list of his tools he can use:
- Auto Crossbow: Attacks all enemies in the vicinity at once.
- Noise Blaster: Casts 'Confuse' on all enemies in the vicinty.
- Bio Blaster: Casts 'Poison' on all enemies in the vicinity.
- Drill: Can puncture right through an enemy's defense, causing physical damage.
- Flash: Casts 'Blind' on all enemies in the vicinity.
- Chainsaw: High physical damage to an enemy as Edgar whirls it around, cutting multiple times. There is also a small chance of instantly dispatching of the enemy (Instant Death).
- Debilitator: Causes an enemy to become weak to a random element.
- Air Anchor: Causes Instant Death on an enemy's next attack. Does not work on enemies immune to Instant Death.
Magic: None. Edgar is more comfortable with physical attacks rather than magical. That said, if he finds an Esper he is comfortable with while traveling through the new world he has found himself in, he will master it if possible.
Summon: Again, no Espers as of yet. There is a possibility of him finding one though.
Appearance/Personality
Hair: Long blonde hair that is tied back with two silk blue ribbons. He has a few shorter strands of hair that fall over his forehead.
Eyes: Bright blue eyes, which the Figaro royal family is known for having.
Ears: Small clear orbs dangle just under his earlobes.
Clothing: On his feet he wears white boots that come up to his mid-calf. Dark blue pants are tucked in, mostly to keep them clean, and also to allow him to move quickly if necessary. A black belt, which also holds his sheath for his sword, is around his waist. He has a matching shirt, a blue dress shirt that is always tucked in as well. Around his shoulders sits a black set of armour which reaches across his chest. When he is deliberately going out into battle, he also puts on black gauntlets to protect his arms. His favourite article of clothing is his blue cape, which he almost always wears. It is a dark blue, to match his clothing, with a yellow trim.
Edgar is a fairly easy-going man. That being said, he takes his Kingly duties very seriously and will always put his people first. He has been known to put on a bit of a show, especially with the Empire, and play the part of a clueless and young King. It is all an act however, as he took to his new role fairly quickly even as a youth. His reputation as being a skirt-chaser helped in his act, although that part was genuine. Edgar loves the ladies. While most of his flirting is entirely playful, he does wish to find someone he can call his Queen. Not just a pretty face (although that would be preferred), but he would like to find an intelligent woman. One who could keep up with him, and challenge him. In his spare time he enjoys tinkering with various machines in and around his castle. He has made the majority of his tools that he uses, and can really be himself with his machines.
The only other person who knows the 'real' Edgar is his brother. Though they are twins, Edgar enjoys introducing himself as the elder brother. Even Sabin has been known to call him 'Big Brother' in the past. The young King has tried desperately to avoid showing too much emotion in public, but that isn't the case with his brother. Sabin has seen sadness, fear, anger, happiness, and love, all of which very few others can claim to have witnessed in Edgar. He is sometimes uneasy about his rule, namely if he is doing a good job or not, and it was Sabin who set him straight. Sometimes thought, he still gets those thoughts. He hasn't seen Sabin since the Merge, and has dispatched some of his subjects to look for the martial artist. He misses his little brother.
He prefers for people not to stand on ceremony with him, unless the situation calls for it or he is among enemies (like the Empire). He is often telling people to simply call him 'Edgar' as opposed to 'King Edgar' or 'your majesty', but most people refuse to do so. His friends in the Returners are few that call him by his given name, which he appreciates more than he would ever say.
History
***Warning: Spoilers for the plot of FFVI***
Edgar and his twin brother Sabin were born to King Stewart Remy Figaro and Queen Crystale Figaro. Sadly, Queen Crystale died at childbirth, leaving the King to raise the two boys with a large staff to support him. Their favourite was a middle-aged woman they referred to as 'Matron'. The boys seemed to grow quickly, and in almost no time they were at the age where they could participate in the 'Hunting of the Antlion'. Only Edgar signed up, but it turned out he needed his brother's help to bring down the monster. They succeeded, and by that time Edgar was already starting to notice girls. He was taller and more muscular than Sabin at that point, and was attractive not only in status but in appearance as well.
The brothers continued to learn as they grew, both in their studies and how to run a kingdom from their father. When they had turned seventeen, they were allowed to sit in on meetings with him. After a handful of times, they encountered Emperor Ghestahl. He had come personally to meet with the King of Figaro, along with his new young generals. Leo got along well with Edgar, but Kefka creeped him out. There was something off about him, something other than the fact that he was done up like a clown. They had a grand banquet to celebrate the Empire's finest joining them, before the Emperor excused themselves to return to Vector.
In less than a week King Stewart was laid up in bed, deathly ill. He had left the day to day dealings mostly to his Chancellor, and only came out of his room when absolutely necessary. He wasn't eating, and even a small outing to his throne room tired him out so badly that he could barely focus. Edgar tried to help where he could, but he worried incessantly about his father. He was in the library one night when Sabin came to see him, asking why the kingdom was in an uproar about a successor to the throne. In one of his weaker moments, Edgar snapped at his brother before fleeing to his room in tears. He had heard the rumours that the Empire had poisoned his father. He had no idea what to make of it. He had been there, and hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary. Two days later, the King had passed away and with his final breaths, he declared that Figaro was to be split by Edgar and Sabin.
It was Matron who broke the news to the boys. It was Sabin's turn to snap this time, though at the woman who raised them instead of his brother, before storming off to the highest tower of the castle. Edgar followed, and was almost swayed by Sabin's offer to leave. However, one of them had to remain there to run the country. He ended up deciding to settle the decision with a toss of a coin. Little did his baby brother know, Edgar had rigged it so Sabin could leave without feeling guilty. He had been given a double-headed coin that he treasured, with one head being his and the other Sabin's, and deliberately chose heads for Sabin during the toss. He was quick to pick it up, concealing the trickery from his brother. Sabin left shortly after, and hadn't been heard from for the next ten years.
Edgar took to his Kingship with vigor and was already a very well-learned young man. He had paid heavy attention during his sit-ins with his father, and had picked up tricks and techniques right away. He continued a friendship with the Empire that had murdered his father, but it was under false pretenses. A few years into his rule a young thief - sorry, treasure hunter - had approached him with a request from an resistance organization called the Returners. Actually the young man had broken into the castle and attempted to requisition some of the artifacts and weapons stored there. Edgar was quick to relieve him of them once he was caught. The young man, Locke, was the go-between for Edgar and the Returners. Edgar pretended to sympathize with the Empire and 'allowed' himself to be used, while simultaneously reporting the Empire's every move to the Returners. He and Locke became close friends during this time.
Eventually Locke brought a young woman to his doorstep. At first, Edgar played his part as an ally of the Empire and offered the young woman, Terra, a safe place to stay. After she explored his castle and returned to the throne room, Edgar was about to lay on some more charm when one of his soldiers burst into the room saying the Empire was coming for a surprise visit. He went to meet with the visitor, Kefka, who was looking for Terra. Edgar played dumb, and blatantly lied to the insane clown, before returning to come up with a plan with his Chancellor.
In the middle of the night, Edgar was awoken by screams coming from outside. He quickly threw on his clothes and rushed out the door to find his beautiful castle aflame. Kefka had caught him in his lie, and decided to torch Figaro as punishment. Luckily for him, they had planned for this very moment. Locke had taken Terra to one of the side bridges on the upper level of his castle as Kefka approached Edgar to give him one more chance. Edgar took the opportunity to jump from the same level on the opposite side and landed on one of three chocobos that had been prepared for him by the other soldiers. He called for the other pair to follow suit and steered the birds to their position. Kefka's parting words hurt him more deeply than he let on, as he was taunted for abandoning his kingdom.
The joke was on Kefka as Edgar gave the order to submerge the castle beneath the sand. His castle could travel through a tunnel of sorts to come up near the city of Kohlingen. The trio escaped and Kefka sent some armoured soldiers after them, where the two men saw Terra use magic for the first time. After a minor freakout on Edgar's part, he came back to himself and they easily defeated the soldiers. The young King decided to bring Terra to meet the rest of the Returners, specifically their leader, and to climb Mt. Kolts to get there from their current position. As they made their way through the winding path of the mountain, eventually they were approached by a fighter named Vargas. The fighter overwhelmed the small group, and would have lost their lives if it weren't for the interference of Sabin.
The death of Vargas seemed to sadden Edgar's brother, but he was overjoyed to see Sabin alive and well. After being reunited, the martial artist offered to join them and they all arrived safely at the Returner's hideout. Banon, their leader, managed to persuade Terra to fight for their cause with her magical powers, just in time. An injured Returner stumbled into the hideout, stating that South Figaro has been attacked and that the Empire knows where the Returners are. They all need to leave right away. Edgar sent Locke back to see what can be done about the occupation of his city, while Edgar, Sabin, Terra, and Banon escape on a raft down the Lete River to head towards Narshe.
An octopus-like monster named Ultros attacked the raft as they neared the halfway point of the river, and after being beaten it tried once more to get his snack. He latched onto Terra's leg and Sabin jumped into the river to finish the creature off. He was sent flying, and the brothers were separated once more as Sabin landed prone in the water and floated in the opposite direction when the river branched off. Edgar put on a brave face in front of the others, but inwardly he was torn apart at the loss of his brother after only just finding him again. The small group, minus Sabin, continued their way down the river and made their way to Narshe.
Unfortunately, due to Terra's history in the town they were turned away at the front gate. Luckily for them Terra remembered a secret entrance that Locke had used when he rescued her, which allowed them access to the town. They managed to meet up with a fellow Returner, Arvis, who gave them an audience with the town elder. Narshe was neutral in the war between the Returners and the Empire, and was afraid of being drawn into the conflict. Banon, Edgar, and Terra were unable to convince the elder to help their cause. Sabin returned with two new allies, and Edgar was once again overjoyed to see his brother alive and well. It wasn't until Locke burst in with an ex-general of the Empire stating that Kefka was on the march towards Narshe, ready to take the Esper that was hidden away in the mountain above the town. Only then did the elder allow the Returners to fight for their town.
The group that had grown in numbers marched to the snow fields behind the town where the Esper had been moved to, and successfully defended the place from Kefka. The Esper reacted with Terra, and threw Edgar and the others over the ledge in order to interact with only Terra. She turned into an Esper herself, and flew away. The group returned to Figaro castle, which had risen above the sand again, and Edgar and Sabin reminisced about what had happened in the castle in the past. Their father's death, the fated coin toss, and some personal words were exchanged between the brothers. In the morning, the castle submerged and made its way down the tunnel towards Kohlingen so they could begin the search for their lost comrade.
Moving around the continent, they eventually found Terra being cared for in the shady town of Zozo. A mythical Esper was looking after her, and had drawn her there. The group needed to find a specific Esper in the Empire capital of Vector which would help her recover. To get there they needed to acquire an airship, and there was only one working airship in the world. The group manages to sneak on board with some wonderful acting by the ex-general, Celes. When the owner of the airship, Setzer, caught them, he was reluctant to help them. Celes knew the history of Sabin's freedom, and asked Edgar for his double-headed coin for the coin toss to determine if Setzer would help them or not. Picking heads, Celes won easily. The gambling pilot thankfully was amused rather than angry at being played, and flew them towards Vector.
The group snuck into Vector and continued through to the Magitek Research facility where the confined Espers were being held. They freed the Espers and returned to Zozo to help Terra, who reverted back to her human form. The group decided to move back to Narshe and planned to combine their money with Figaro's machinery, and have Terra contact the Espers through the Sealed Gate to their world. The Espers would attack at the same time, and the Empire would be ruined. Not all went according to plan, as the Espers burst free from the Gate and leveled Vector in a rage. The Emperor called for a truce, and while Locke, Terra, and Celes were sent to Thamasa, Edgar and the others stayed to gather information on the Empire.
Edgar was the one who figured out what was really going on. The maid that had brought them tea succumbed to his charm, and eventually told him everything the Emperor was planning. He wanted the power of the Triad, the three Goddesses. After meeting up with the group in Thamasa, and flirting with the young Relm until he found out she was only ten, they all returned to the airship in time to see a chunk of the world rip apart and raise itself into the sky to create the Floating Continent, which held the three Statues of the Goddesses. Kefka moved the statues, throwing the balance of magic into chaos. The group escaped, but the airship was ripped apart in the process. The end that Edgar had been standing on fell, and he was seriously injured.
During the next year, Edgar recovered from his injuries and attempted to return home to Figaro. The world had changed dramatically, but he still knew where his home had been. The castle was nowhere to be found, and he learned that it was stuck under the stand. He disguised himself as a man named 'Gerad', and borrowed some traits from Locke to play the part of a thief. He hired another group of actual thieves called the Crimson Robbers to break into the castle. In actuality he was planning on double crossing them, as he just wanted to find out of his people were safe. The thieves had escaped from the castle when it got stuck, wherever it was. He simply had no way of getting to it. The plot formulated in Nikeah, where he ran into Celes and Sabin.
Desperate for his plan to succeed, he tried to throw them off. It pained him greatly to do so, but he needed to return to Figaro. They followed him and snuck onto the ship he had commandeered. At their arrival in South Figaro, Celes and Sabin encountered Edgar once more. They were getting in the way of his plan, and he needed to escape their questions. One of the thieves came to collect him, and the pair left. Edgar knew they were being followed, but refused to call attention to it. Making their way through the cave, the thieves stayed true to their word and showed him the secret entrance to the castle. There they moved down into the engine room where they found the reason the castle had gotten stuck.
A monster had entwined itself among the machinery. Edgar dismissed the thieves, telling them he would take care of the problem. As they left, Celes confronted him one last time. The King finally revealed that they had been right all along. They defeated the monster together, and Edgar explained his plan to them before hiding from the thieves who had looted the place. He allowed them to leave and the castle rose to the surface. The royal brothers and Celes traveled to Kohlingen, where they ran into Setzer drowning his sorrows. They convinced him to come with them in their battle with Kefka, and procured another airship.
Traveling all over the new world they had found themselves in, Edgar and his small group found the rest of their friends including two new ones. Eventually they were ready to take on Kefka's Tower which he was using to terrorize the world with. Climbing the tower, battling strong monsters, when they reach the top they encounter Kefka himself. The man sent the three Goddesses to deal with the intruders, and the magical beings were defeated. All that was left was to defeat Kefka, and after a tough battle the clown finally fell. With his death the tower started to collapse, and the group had to escape while avoiding crumbling debris.
Edgar was following Cyan and Celes down a stairway when it collapsed beneath him. Barely managing to hold on to a ledge he shouted for Cyan, who was terrified of machinery, to press the switch to remake the stairs. The knight pushed through his fear and Edgar was saved. Later on, this time with Setzer and Celes, Setzer flipped a coin to decide which path to take. Edgar and Celes moved to follow the coin, when Setzer called for them to take the other path which turned out to be the correct choice. As they continued down the tower, Edgar was working to get a door open when a girder fell from overhead. His brother stepped in and protected him, allowing the King to open he door.
Down yet another path, he and the moogle, Mog, were stuck in another area that had collapsed under them. Edgar moved to work the crane, saving the dangling moogle from plunging to his death. While moving down the tower with the rest of his friends, the group makes it to the airship with just enough time to spare. After they escape, Edgar returns to Figaro to take up his throne. His brother didn't stay at the castle, but he visited often.
When the Merge happened, Figaro emerged in a different area of the new world. Luckily, South Figaro appeared close by as well. Edgar hasn't heard from Sabin since the Merge, and once again sent people out to look for his brother. The only times he could safely leave his castle were on diplomatic visits to other areas to the world. The majority of his visits are still confined to the continent he is on, as he would still appreciate to have more subjects. He isn't power-hungry, he just thoroughly enjoys being a King to many people, and enjoys helping to negotiate and deal with problems. With the change in location, a whole array of new technology has opened up to Edgar, and he has since upgraded the castle's machinery. His main goal, however, is to still find his brother who is lost to him yet again.
