Name: Shala Katoni
Nicknames/Alias: Fuujin
FF: FFVIII
Age: 19
Height/build: 5’8, 125lbs
DoB: May 27th
Weapon: Chakra/Pinwheel (Missile Blade)
Level (anywhere between 1-100): 40
Strength: 120
Physical: 60
Magical: 30
Agility: 30
Special Skill(s):
Zan: Thrown chakra attack, medium damage on one opponent.
Mestu: Thrown chakra attack, medium damage on several opponents.
Sai (Limit Break): Melee-ranged attack consisting of many rapid-succession attacks, very high damage on one opponent.
Magic: Aero, Tornado, Cura, Esuna, Haste
Summon: Pandemona
Appearance: Having been born with a very unusual set of physical traits, Fuujin’s white hair and red eyes are, unfortunately, quite natural, though one of those strange orbs she lost many years ago. She keeps her hair cut short and parted towards the left to reduce the impairment to her good eye, and perhaps to conceal the unsightly black patch just a bit more.
Average of build, she doesn’t cut an incredibly imposing figure in terms of height or musculature, but her ferocity in battle reflects the suitability of her alias. She prefers blue colors, further fitting herself into the carefully-crafted persona of the wind master.
Personality: Fuujin’s personality is difficult to judge because of her indifference towards most individuals, but her loyalty to her close companions – few as they are – is easily apparent. She speaks in terse, sharp sentences, making her nigh unapproachable to anyone but her closest companions, and neither she nor others seem desirous of rectifying that. Though usually calm and level, she can have a bit of a temper, which sometimes results in bursts of aggression that – much like her speech – are sharp but quickly over. She trusts few and has little love for humanity as a whole, but once her good faith is invested in a person she’ll stand by them and defend them through anything.
History: She doesn’t really remember the chaos of Esthar during the First Sorceress War, but sometimes she thinks she hears sounds reminiscent of it, like the ocean trapped in the coil of a shell. Just another orphan, like so many others, many of which currently fill the hallways of various Gardens and other military barracks.
The differences in Fuujin’s story – back then referred to as ‘Shala’, though she doesn’t know if that was a name given to her by her parents or by her caretakers – began when she was born with unnaturally bright hair and rich eyes, in a world so frightened by any possible sign of sorceress threat. Too young to recall, she doesn’t know if she was turned in to Odine or picked up by researchers for her abnormalities, but there were many other young children brought into the Estharian labs alongside her, each of which possessed some unusual physical trait or mental faculty. None quite as visually obvious as hers, though.
It was speculated that the exposure to Adel’s magic and magic-based technologies might’ve affected the fetuses of some, causing the abnormalities. While so many were afraid of anything even potentially sorceress-related, Odine was excited at the prospect of humans fused with magic, which correlated to his work on junction systems. Even now, she doesn’t know what became of all the others, but after several years of study the researchers finally concluded that, aside from the strange coloration, there was nothing unusual about her. Perhaps the effects of magic caused the albinism, but she showed no other enhancements, nothing of much use to Odine.
At the time, Esthar had already developed the cloaking device and closed itself off to the rest of the world, but Odine was still entertaining envoys from Garden to perfect the junctioning system. They were paying him handsomely for the research, which was all he really cared about; the costs of the war left Esthar on the verge of economic collapse, so the outside funds were especially necessary, and several Gardens further eased the weight by paying to take some of the orphaned and abandoned for military training.
Life around Balamb and Balamb Garden proved a huge difference from the hallways of Esthar’s facilities, and suddenly there were adults who were warmly accepting instead of the usual cool indifference. With adults, she learned to get along well with, but her peers proved far more problematic, far less accepting of her strange appearance, strange personality, strange accent. Those first set of years were rough; she excelled in combat, but didn’t have a lot of drive when it came to mundane academic aspects, and struggled socially. However, she did passably well, and showed promise.
Things improved dramatically when she met Seifer, who accepted her without complaint or prejudice. He taught her that she was what she decided to be, not what others said she was, and she – along with Raijin – formed the fierce warrior ‘Fuujin’, taking control of her existence. Eventually, she decided SeeD wasn’t for her, but she stayed around Garden to help train students and form part of the Disciplinary Committee – at least, until Seifer ran errant. Her and Raijin left their home to aid him in fulfilling his dream (alive, hopefully), and even joined up with the Galbadian Army, but in the end, that didn’t feel right to her either. Thankfully, all three of them pulled through the chaos, and even though Fuujin still doesn’t know for sure what her purpose is, she feels she has plenty of time to figure it out.
