Appearance:
Caius is tall and muscular but more lean than bulky yet his strength remains obvious from his movements. He has shoulder length purple hair in which a variety of beads and feathers can be seen. Around his forehead he wears a purple bandana that is long enough to fall down over his shoulders.
His armor is not bulky or particularly decorative. It is made from a mix of materials and is primarily black and purple though does have a few small silver coloured adornments. His boots are simple and black with a white fur trim around the top.
Personality:
Caius is a somewhat stoic individual, calm, collected and not often showing a lot of emotion. He is very frustrated about not only his own situation but also Yeul’s and it seems he cannot talk about it without rage and conviction becoming apparent.
He is a very determined character and has a great deal of willpower. Now that he finds himself drawing to a point where he is willing to try anything to break the cycle of the seeress he is finding his previous kind nature is failing him. It is hard for him not to feel cynical but there is still a part of him that is selfless and kind, willing to do anything for his charge. His more caring side is rarely shown to others though as only Yeul is the focus of his concerns.
In battle he finds some release, he is confident enough in his abilities to toy with opponents or dispatch them without blinking. He enjoys being challenged though and is known even to smile as he fights purely from the thrill of battle.
History:
Caius was born in Ancient Paddra, hundreds of years ago, in a city whose beliefs held the seeress Yeul of great import. Yeul was a child born with silver hair, green eyes and the eyes of Etro, or rather, the gift to see visions of the future. Calling it a gift, though, is not necessarily correct as with each vision Yeul would lose part of her life and take a step closer to death. She would eventually see her last vision before ever having a chance to truly live and inevitably she would be reborn only to die before reaching maturity once more.
The seeress was always protected by a guardian whose place was earned through defeating their predecessor in battle. When a guardian rose up having done just that they were turned into L’cie and subsequently granted great strength for the task of protecting the seeress. Caius was one of these, a guardian made L’cie who fought with all his strength for Yeul. In this time only one warrior came close to defeating him, it was in honour of his mighty opponent that he took the surname Ballad.
When Paddra fell under attack by an army seeking Yeul, Caius fought with his all might, summoning from within himself a mighty Eidolon that he knew would cost him his life. The goddess Etro saw the lengths he was willing to go to for the sake of Yeul and released him from his l’cie fate, imbuing him with the heart of chaos so that he might live on forever and defend every Yeul reborn with the same dedication and the gifted knowledge of the timeline that came with the heart of the goddess.
Hundreds of years have passed since then, hundreds of maddening years. He defended Yeul from all number of threats, from civil war and invasion to unjustified hatred but not once did he succeed in saving her from her fate as a seeress. He protected the child unwaveringly but he soon realised that her fate was cruel. Never would he defend the young woman or the seeress grown old for she would always be snatched away by her own “gift” of the goddess. To live on forever in an endless cycle of watching a child die was no true gift either and slowly he came to hate the goddess for her cruel japes for her mockeries of gifts.
To this day, Caius schemes for a way to break Yeul’s cycle of death and rebirth so that he might save her from the inevitable early death. He hopes to find that answer in the events that recently brought the Worlds together. The rumours he has heard about l’cie that removed the Fal’cie from cocoon but have been freed from their fate of crystal or Cie’th have piqued his interest. They reek of Etro’s interference and he means to investigate.
