Ten years have passed since the Fifth Blight swept over Ferelden. After a nearly crippling defeat at Ostagar, Aedan Cousland led a small band of heroes to victory over the darkspawn. His companion Alistair was crowned King of Ferelden alongside Anora, his new wife. The royal pair brought stability back to the country, despite increasingly distant relations with Orzammar and King Harrowmont. The Warden himself disappeared shortly after dealing with a darkspawn surge in Amaranthine.
The fall of Ostagar caused many Fereldans to flee to the relative safety of the Free Marches. Among these desperate folk were members of the Hawke family, who escaped with the help of Flemeth. Over the next ten years the family experienced both triumph and heartache. Marian would raise to the pinnacle of society, and eventually be named the Champion of Kirkwall; but she would be separated from her sister, and lose her mother. She eventually fled the city after a friend's betrayal started a war between the Templar Order and those who possessed magic.
In the years since the balance of power has shifted greatly in Thedas.
The Mages have taken Kirkwall as their stronghold. They are unaware of the dangers that surround the city caused by the Tevinters of old. The fade is thinner there, and it is easier to succumb to magic’s dark temptations. Some who originally only wanting peace are beginning to be twisted by pride, desire, and rage.
The Templars have broken away from the Chantry and converted the Circle Tower in Ferelden into their base of operations. Most have become fanatical in their belief that mages must be contained or killed. They have begun hunting down Dalish clans as well, believing them to be a source of heretical magic. Voices of reason are easily being drowned out by fear and paranoia.
Bands of pirates, mercenaries, and bandits have increased in number, encourage by the turmoil. The Tevinter Imperium and the Qunari are an ever present threat, with the power to send the whole world even deeper into chaos. A civil war has broken out in Orlais. All across Thedas, the nobility and common folk struggle to hold together some semblance of normality. Some have begun to embrace new opportunities, for good or ill.
Things that were once certain have shifted, and everyone must find their place in this new world.
The world is going up in flames, what new life will you make after rising from the ashes?
