Name: Mikel Nikolai Kaminski
Nicknames/Alias: Niko
FF: XII/XII-2
Age: 22
Height/build: Tallish and slender with a good amount of muscle tone for a rich boy.
DoB: 20 years Before Fall
Race: Human
Weapon: Can use a sidearm and sword. Sword techniques are based on the fencing lessons he took throughout his youth. He learned from the bodyguard his father had assigned him as boy, who was an expert swordsman.
Level: 40
Strength: 120
→ Physical: 55
→ Magical: 0
→ Agility: 65
Special Skill(s):
→ “Greasemonkey” (or AMP Techhead) - Despite his pretty-boy looks, he is actually a rather competent mechanic--if only of velocycles and AMP-related technology. If its got an engine or an AMP system, he can figure his way around it. Also, in the vein of automobiles, he is very skilled at driving fast. He had participated in a number of drag races.
→ Limited Hacking - His hacking skills go only as far as being able to bypass security gates, locks, and making use of the Transgate systems. More complex computer systems with firewalls--not so much. He would need to rely on the aid of more experienced hackers to get into anything more complex.
→ Fighter - While he can’t exactly be considered a martial artist, he has ventured into street-fighting. He has participated in illegal “no holds barred” fighting matches, as well as fight against both street thugs and law enforcement alike. Associated skills are recognizing threats in an area, reading body language, hitting openings, timing, dealing both blocks/covers, giving chase or outrunning a chase, using or avoiding obstacles, use of the environment, etc.
Paradigm Role(s):
Commando - (Auto) Powerchain, Lifesipon, Faultsiphon, Launch, Ravage, Smite, Blindside, Scourge, Jeopardize, Deathblow, Adrenaline
Commando - (Abilities) Attack, Blitz, Ruin, Ruinga
Magic: He is only capable of using synthesised magic via the use of black-market manadrives and AMP technology. This can include the use of military grade Grav-Con Units, Gravity Bombs, and hacked Transgate Technology (summon portals).
Summon: “Yojimbo” and “Daigoro”, also known as Shion and Felicien. (Might also know the location of where the fal'Cie Yojimbo is being stored.)
Appearance: Fair complexioned with dark hair. His eyes are a dark gray that, depending on the lighting, can look violet or blue. The same goes for the color of his hair. He has a monochromatic sleeve tattoo that runs down his left arm. As tends to favor wearing darker colors like plum, navy, or black. Subtle pinstripes are also a frequently occurring pattern. He tends to be well dressed in tailored and expensive slacks, shirts, and blazers. He often forgoes wearing a tie (and keeps the first button undone) when he can get away with it. However, when he takes to the streets, he tends to wear department store clothing that doesn’t draw much attention--like sneakers, slacks or jeans, and button down shirts or t-shirts.
Personality:
→ Charismatic Loner - He is very friendly and sociable, but there is a certain amount of aloofness to him when he interacts with others. He talks and cracks jokes, but he keeps his more personal thoughts to himself. This is a type of shyness (or mistrust of others) masked behind charisma and bravado. Perhaps by the circumstances of his youth, he’s never been able to make close friends. There always runs the risk of someone using that friendship to stab him in the back. Really trusting someone is something difficult for him. This reluctance to getting close to anyone probably has a lot to do with both his mega-rich upbringing, and his family’s connection with the Syndicate. He’s grown up in a world where everyone is trying to use someone else for some sort of personal gain. If someone wants to do you kindness, it tends to be because they want something in return.
→ Competitive Streak - He does not like losing. Although it was never expected of him to do well in school, the only reason he managed good grades was by the virtue of his competitive nature and stubbornness. As a little boy, he wanted that gold star sticker. He wanted to always be the best in his class. In high school, once he had the licence to drive, he became a greasemonkey who refused to lose in a drag race. This also leads him to being somewhat ruthless in business, and he is not always above “stacking the deck” to win.
→ Deception - He has a pretty good Poker Face, used for both home and business. He tries not to let others know what he's thinking, especially those in his close and extended "Family." Lying to those who are closest to him, as well to both the Syndicate and Authorities alike, is becoming more and more common as his involvement with the Underground and the possible post-merge factions increase.
→ Love Life - Although he has gone on several dates in that last few years, and has fooled around on occasion, he has yet to manage anything resembling a meaningful relationship. Then again, he is only twenty-two years old. Time could change things.
→ Compassionate Side and Heroic Tendencies - Mikel often finds himself driven to help those who cannot help themselves, especially when he personally witnesses an injustice. Although, this might be a form of altruism born from a desire for absolution, it is this good side of him that drove Mikel to join the resistance against the Sanctum and their purge.
→ Some Anger Issues - As someone who tends to bottle his anger, he can be prone to sporadic outbursts of rage. However, he tends to take out his aggression through street fighting.
→ The Struggle Between Light and Dark - Having grown up in a crime family, Mikel's moral compass is highly skewed toward the side of villainy. However, he does have a large amount of goodness in him that's fighting off the darkness, and urging him to change for the better. This goodness often puts him at odds with his own father. Although they have a realatively good relationship, there is tension and veiled distrust. He loves his father for he is family, but at the same time, does not like the man.
History:
Mikel was born and raised in Eden, Cocoon. A member of the upper class, he comes from Old Money. While most parents of children from the working class may try to get their kids into the right preschool, grade school, and high school, in order to even have a shot at Eden’s Ivy League, such things were never a priority in his youth. Being from Old Money, if he wanted to, he could easily buy his way into the most prestigious university. Also, getting a college degree was simply not as an important concern of his parents, because Mikel's fate within the company (and syndicate) had already been decided. While Mikel had attended a public high school (though admittedly ones located near wealthy communities), elementary school and junior high had been at private acadamys--it was by his own decision that he decide to go to a public high school instead.
Outside of school, he did have access to private lessons in whatever activity caught his interest--music, riding, fencing, etc. Vacations were also a frequent thing, as his father took him along to learn about the family business (and both legal and illegal sides of it).
In his teens, Mikel entered a rather rebellious phase. He started to frequently participate in the nightlife of Eden. His name was often on the list of the newest clubs (once he was old enough to not need to sneak into them with a fake ID). Due to some of his nightly shenanigans, Mikel did attain a juvie record for things like DUI and assault. He had attended Eden University after high school, and at first, was he was often seen as a “partying frat boy” who was once suspended for helping to steal test answers. He would have gotten kicked out, were not his family one of the University’s primary financial donors. He would not start getting his act together until after his girlfriend was killed in drunk driving accident. The whole affair was swept under the rug thanks to his father’s affluence, but it was something for which Mikel could never forgive himself.
Prior to the Fall, Mikel had become involved with the anti Sanctum resistance efforts. This was due to him being in Bodhum during the fireworks festival when the Pulse Vestige was found. He wasn’t exactly supposed to be in Bodum at the time, and was going under his Niko alias in order to move with some amount of anonymity. Mikel ended up being among the people Purged, and thus sent via train to Hanging Edge. He had always suspected there was something strange about the Purge, but it was not until this event that he finally confirmed its true purpse--a masacre. Learning the true fate of those who get Purge, Mikel was quick to join with the people enlisted by NORA to help sabotage and derail the train. After escaping Hanging Edge, he uses his resources to help smuggle weapons, vehicles, and supplies to Cocoon’s underground movements.
Post-merge, he still often make an appearance in night clubs, whether it be for pleasure or for business. For him, it is a means for both people-watching and information gathering. Also, it would be fair to assume that much of his Syndicate and Underground business is conducted within (or in the vicinity of) such establishments.
When it comes to events and galas, he always attends with a lovely woman on his arm. These women range from models to daughters of prospective clients or business partners. It was often his father who set Mikel up with the later, as a means to foster good will, trust, or to otherwise schmooze over the girl’s father. Although Mikel did not care for such arranged dates, he went along with them, and was the utmost gentleman, as he was expected to be. If the girl seemed the kind open to banter having some fun, he’d flash an apologetic smile and say things like: “Truth be told, I’m not much for these types of gatherings, either.” or “How about we find something a little more interesting to do than starting at gray hair and penguin suits?”
Family Business:
The family business was founded two hundred years ago as a small, Eden-based construction company known as Kaminski Railways. As the company grew larger, and started expanding into other areas dealing with the operations and management of transportation systems outside railways, it came to be known as Kamin Industries; or colloquially, as Common Industries. It was a name that stuck.
Just prior to the fall of Cocoon, Common Industries held varying military contracts with the PSICOM division of the military. Such contracts related to the development and infrastructure of the Purge trains, as well as transgate operation and aerospace engineering. They were the blue-collar, coverall wearing, workers that kept things going for everyone else, but whom nobody seemed to notice when they were around. However, at this point in time, their involvement with Cocoon’s infrastructure was a fairly secondary role, since it was predominantly the fal’Cie who took care of Cocoon’s basic industrial needs. In addition to Common Industry’s original focus of railway maintenance and construction, the company decided to work on top of the fal’Cie infrastructure; while at the same time, trying to gain an understanding of all the nooks and crannies to be found within Cocoon’s construction. It was by finding ways to fulfill people’s civil engineering desires, beyond that of the basic needs provided by the fal’Cie, that Common Industries really started to flourish.
In the aftermath of the fall of Cocoon, Common Industries decided to take action toward entering into a more prominent role within the lives of the people of cocoon. Without the fal’Cie to keep things going, Common industries decided to purchase (or do a hostile take-over of) the smaller companies that were facing bankruptcy in the aftermath. Therefore, while other companies were retreating in the financial collapse that followed the Merge, Common Industries planned to increase their workforce in order to corner the market once the economy started to bounce back.
Predominantly, they stuck to acquiring companies that deal with the transportation systems and maintenance. The acquired companies were made subsidiaries to Common Industries. From this, a new conglomerate was formed: Common Consolidated. Headquartered within budding city located at the bottom of Cocoon’s piller, Common Consolidated works with the development and maintenance of new post-fall/merge transportation infrastructure. Through their foundries, plants, and factories, they also produces parts need for transportations systems (such as automotive, construction, aerospace, rail, and defense).
Common Consolidated:
→ One of their major R&D projects is figuring out how to get summon portals, or Transgate Technology, to function without fal’Cie power. There exist a few experimental prototypes which are kept under high security.
→ Aerospace Division is working toward the implementation of a series of low orbital satellites for the purposes of navigating this post-merge world. Essentially, they are trying to get a working Global Positioning System (GPS) into place.
→ Although it was the Provisional Government(?) that footed the bill for the Elevator from Pulse to Cocoon, Common Consolidated might be among those that got the engineering, fabrication, or construction contracts.
→ Civil engineers are working toward re-establishing routs between the now disjointed cities of Cocoon and Pulse, as well as any neighboring areas that want to form a connection.
→ Mikel’s father serves as the majority shareholder, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO for Common Consolidated. Directly under him are the COO/Presidents of each subsidiary division. The direct running of the company is handled by the Board, who report their progress to him.
→ Mikel’s role in the company is that of a board member, shareholder, and a subsidiary president. The company he presides over deals mostly with AMP Technology (as well as associated AMP propulsion systems R&D. Therefore, the Aerospace division (and their GPS project) might also fall under his umbrella.
→ Common Consolidated operates some foundries that produce parts for transportation systems--automotive, construction, aerospace, rail, and defense. May function as an Industry Partner with government contracts.
Eden Syndicate:
→ The Eden Syndicate was neutral toward the fa’Cie pre-fall. There is even a rumor going around the leader of the Syndicate was actually a l’cie. An alternative theory is that the head of the Syndicate might have been a fal'Cie, and the Inner Circle were all l'Cie, but neither speculation was ever confirmed. It may be true, or it may be nothing more than a rumor.
→ Mikel’s father is a member of the Inner Circle, and is one of the “Spies” that runs the Security Group of the Syndicate.
→ Mikel’s family has been in the Syndicate for generations
→ Only the Inner Circle knows about the involvement of Mikel’s family with the Syndicate, because the Kaminski family has a public face and military contacts to maintain.
→ While Mikel is fairly well connected with the Provincial Government and the Academy, he is also providing intelligence to the Syndicate as well as the Cocoon Underground.
→ The Syndicate Counselor (Mikel’s father) is high up in the Transportation Department, which is connected to every city, most likely, and to restricted places like Hanging Edge. With the Syndicate having an Elite member with these kind of connections, they quite literally got the keys to worldwide transportation. Contraband and whatever else are able to be smuggled through the transportation system due to this.
→ Although Mikel grew up in the Syndicate, he may have some misgivings about how the Syndicate does things. It’s possible he might help the “Good Guys” from time to time, if he disagrees with some decision the Syndicate has made. It’s possible that he’s has the secret agenda of either dismantling the Syndicate, or seizing control of it.
Below are tentative plotter stuff, not really to be considered part of bio...
The Phoenix Foundation (alternatively considering "Lazarus" as the name):
→ One of the "New Factions" that cropped up post-merge.
→ Mikel's contact with the foundation is "Daigoro."
→ May be responsible for Shion's re-awakening from his fossil stasis as a Cei'th stone.
→ Suspected to be connected to highly controversial technological research.
→ Might have some connection to a rogue Al-Bhed operation in that's been poking around the old Rozarrian Oil Rigs in the sandsea.
→ Might have something to do with Rakesh's "crystal stealing" venture.
→ Might be a faction that Al-Cid's little birds have been keeping an eye on.
