Desert, desert, desert, that's all the world was anymore. Ever since the Merge, Larsa had encountered more desert terrain than he thought possible. At least Jahara had water, even if it was still unbearably hot. Then again, his layered Archadian clothing didn't help matters much—perhaps the next time he went gallivanting about he would remember to use the local dress as an example for what his own attire should be.

Oh well. He was happy to just be out of Archades and exploring. He wondered if perhaps he'd run into his old friends while he was roaming the new cities and such—they always had a penchant for getting in trouble, didn't they? It didn't matter where they went, there was some sort of bad luck that hung over them like a cloud. Or maybe it was a cloud of good luck? Who knew, all he really cared about was knowing that they were safe.

Sliding from his chocobo, Larsa Ferrinas Solidor sighed softly, shielding his eyes from the sun with his hand. Jahara wasn't too far off now, which was good. The upcoming meeting at Healen Lodge was fast approaching, and the young Emperor thought maybe sticking around in Jahara until the departure date would be a good idea. Besides, he liked the Garif, they were an interesting people and though they were at a disadvantage in current times, they were kind enough. Besides, he'd be more than willing to pay for a cot to sleep in for a few nights, and he could supply revenue for them by stocking up on potions.

One could never have too many potions.

Larsa tucked a lock of hair behind his ear, looking about. It seemed more barren here than before, perhaps they'd had a particularly rough dry season. Either way, the...how should he put it? Emptiness? Yes. That was good. The emptiness of the area was strangely refreshing compared to the crowded streets of Archades, and the sudden increase of people meant limited space everywhere. So...this was nice.

Tugging at his collar a bit, Larsa clicked his tongue at his chocobo to urge it to follow him, his hand gripping the reigns as they walked towards the gate. His footsteps were light but purposeful, and he waved to one of the hunter Garif guarding the entrance. He was sure that with the tension recently they'd had to increase their guard...

Maybe he should be careful...what if the Garif didn't want visitors at the moment...?

This was ridiculous! He was going to die. He thought that he would be strong enough for this mark, but by fighting his way through the plains he had lost a great deal more of his strength than he imagined he would. The Wus had thoroughly drained him. Max turned and looked over his shoulder at the creature pursuing him, and yelped with surprise as he tripped over a rock in his path. Hitting the ground hard, his bow flew out of his hand and landed a few feet away.

Groaning both from exhaustion and frustration, he rolled over to find the Enkelados standing above him. All he had to do was make it to Jahara. The Garif would likely help him, and he could distantly see the top of the settlement. The Enkelados raised a massive foot, and Max threw himself sideways to avoid being crushed. Pushing himself back to his feet, he stumbled forward to grab his bow and readied an arrow.

He was far too tired to do anything but a regular attack, but all he needed to do was drive it off. He would try this mark again after he had rested up and regained his strength. His hand shook as he aimed his weapon, and he bit his lip when he tried to steady himself. Taking a deep breath, Max let the arrow fly, and allowed himself a small smile when it reached the target. Letting out a soft "Ha!" he turned and started to run once more.

The boy hadn't gotten very far when the ground started to move beneath his feet. The monster had leapt forward after shaking off the attack, and Max was taken down once more. He kept a hold of his weapon this time, but he was so tired he couldn't even find the energy to roll over, let alone fight or run anymore. Yep...he was going to die.

(OOC: Sorry it's so short, the next one will be much better I promise!)

Larsa had been whistling softly to himself as he walked towards the settlement, but suddenly stopped upon hearing the angry roar of a monster. It must be injured, and when there was an angry, injured monster there was surely a fight. And where there was a fight...

He should take a look, see if he needed to step in.

Veering off in that direction, Larsa ran towards where he heard the beast, and saw only a single figure fighting off the creature, and he looked like he was quickly running out of energy. Larsa's heart leaped into his throat at the thought—he could not, in good conscience, walk away now. It went against what he and House Solidor stood for.

Unsheathing Joyeuse, the Emperor stepped forward and called to the young man, taking up an offensive stance and glancing over.

“On your feet—you can't see the enemy fall with your face in the dirt!” He called, giving a slight smile before attacking. His stance, skill, and energy level had improved greatly over the few short years he'd been on the throne; Archades could not have a weak fledgling Emperor, especially in a state of reform as they were.

His blade easily slicing into the beast's hide, it let out a howl and stumbled a bit, enabling Larsa to land another blow. It struck true, and with a gurgle the attacking creature fell. It had been weakened, he noted, by the other's arrows and possibly a lack of food, and so wasn't to hard to take down. However, that was not his concern at the moment. Flicking the blood from his sword, he sheathed it again and moved to help the other, grey eyes scanning for any sign of serious injury.

“Are you hurt terribly?” he asked, reaching into a pouch and pulling out a small phial—he'd purchased this one in Balphonhiem on his way...it was strange having to pass through there at all. But he found that potions from different areas acted differently, and those made in the coastal town eased aches and pains more readily than the others, did more for bruising and scrapes than deadly gashes and broken bones.

“Perhaps you should rest for a moment.”

Hearing a familiar voice speak to him, Max managed to flip over so he was seated on the ground just as the creature fell to the sword in the other boy's hand. When he was approached, however, his eyes widened when he realized just who had saved him! His mouth dropped open and all he could do was stare at his young Emperor. "I..." Attempting to get to his feet, he was dismayed to find that nearly all of his strength had left him. He managed to get into a kneeling position, and hoped that would be good enough. Bowing his head as reverently as he was able to, his voice cracked when he eventually spoke. "Lord Larsa!"

Of all the people who could have come to his aid, why did it have to be Lord Larsa? He never imagined he would be in the presence of any sort of royalty, let alone his own Emperor. The most important person Max had ever met was a shop owner! Or maybe the Guild leader. Either way, it was definitely not the same thing. Keeping his head bowed, he struggled to find words that could possibly be appropriate to say to Lord Larsa. Absolutely nothing came to mind.

Unfortunately that wasn't the worst of it. The short burst of adrenaline that had flowed through his system was quickly depleting, and he was starting to feel even more tired and sore now that it was over. Even though he was only kneeling, his legs were starting to shake with the effort of keeping him upright, and his back had bent so that now his arms were keeping his upper body supported. He still had yet to answer the other boy, and he bit his lip with nervousness. "I...will be fine, my Lord." he said shakily, but still did not raise his head to look at Lord Larsa directly. He had already performed so many irreparable acts, he knew he wouldn't be able to handle another.

At the offer to rest, Max blinked in surprise as he stared at his hands and knees. That wasn't what he had expected. "Thank you." he whispered, adding a belated "my Lord" as he forgot his manners yet again. He was so tired!

Working hard to get himself back into a somewhat comfortable position, Max risked a glance upwards to his saviour. What was he doing all the way out here? Sitting awkwardly on the ground, his eyes darted away nervously to focus on a nearby rock. He couldn't ask Lord Larsa that! It wasn't any of his business. Deciding to sit in silence, he sat as straight as he could in his Emperor's presence, though in his current state he was failing miserably. Max closed his eyes and groaned quietly. This whole situation was awful. He had so many questions running through his mind, but couldn't find the words to ask them. Or the backbone, really. Maybe Lord Larsa would take pity on him and leave him to the other monsters, though it wasn't likely. He knew the young Emperor was kind, but he just hoped he wouldn't embarrass himself too much further.

Larsa couldn't help but smile a bit at the would-be-warrior's nervousness—had he been in his shoes, the Emperor suspected that he would have been slightly shocked as well. However, the amusement soon left his features when he saw how the boy was trembling, and his smile became comforting.

“There are no Lords on the field,” he said, uncorking the potion he held in his hand. “Only companions. Here, drink. It will ease the fatigue.”

Moving a bit, Larsa sat as well, his grey eyes regarding the stranger. So, he was from Archades? He thought he might have seen his face before...and he recognized the look in his eyes. The need to do better, to prove oneself, to escape and provide and become more than what he was. He'd seen that look all too often in Old Archades, mostly in the young seeking to venture out into the world and become more than an urchin. The look both made him sad and proud—to think that the other would have the courage to leave his home on his own was reason to applaud him, but his foolishness on traveling alone was worth reprimand. However, Larsa thought that the boy probably saw his folly now, seeing as how if the Emperor wouldn't have stepped in he would probably be sitting in the digestive tract of the beast he slew.

“And please, call me by name. Formalities are best left in court or on the tongue of a rival. Friends do not wear the veil of rank.”

That having been said, Larsa reached out a gloved hand with a bright smile, hoping for a shake. “I do not believe I know your name. I can't very well escort you to your destination without knowing what to call you—seems a bit puerile to me.”

His breath was slowly coming back to him as he fought to regain some sort of control over his body. The popping of a cork caught his attention and his green eyes darted back to the young Lord. At the gentle admonishment, he dropped his gaze again as he felt his cheeks start to redden. Titles don’t just disappear. You are still a Lord. But aloud he said nothing. At the offer to drink the potion that was being presented to him, Max cautiously reached out and accepted the bottle. “Thank you, my Lord.” he whispered, and drank the bitter liquid quickly. It would have been rude to decline such a gift.

His already large eyes widened even more, giving him an almost comical look of surprise when Lord Larsa joined him on the ground. Lords don’t sit on the ground! Max watched as the other boy observed him, and his blush intensified. Looking away as their eyes met, he breathed in deeply as he felt the potion start to take effect. His muscles were still tense, but he could no longer feel them shaking from exhaustion. They weren’t as sore, either. He glanced around at their surroundings, making sure they weren’t about to be attacked while they – no, he – recovered from the failed hunt. His eyes darted back to the young Lord again. I can’t believe he saved me. I owe him my life. Why a Lord would save somebody like him was beyond comprehension.

Max didn’t even notice that he had completely zoned out while he was staring at Lord Larsa until the other began speaking again. He blinked in surprise when he was asked to completely disregard the title, going back to their former topic. I can’t do that! His mouth gaped like a fish, and he looked down at the hand that was held out to him. I can’t... Slowly extending his own hand, it stopped halfway and his eyes flicked up nervously. But he’s asking me to. I can’t ignore that. After a bit more hesitation, he took a deep breath and closed the distance between their hands, giving Lord Larsa an extremely brief shake. You can’t call me a friend. I’m a nobody. You’re a Lord.

Though he could have kicked himself as Lord Larsa asked for his name. That should have been the first thing he said! “Oh! I’m sorry! My name’s M-Max. But...uh...you don’t need to...uh...escort me. I’m sure you’ve got other things to do, my Lord.” In his embarrassment his speech was much more informal and uncertain before his voice lowered on the last sentence. The title slipped out, but he probably couldn’t have even stopped it if he tried. He’s a Lord. Of course he’s got other things to do. As he realized how he had spoken to Lord Larsa, he bit his lip and brought one of his knees up as though to shield himself from the other boy. “I...wouldn’t be of any use to you. You...you saw me.” Hugging his knee close to his chest, he looked away again as he realized just how pitiful he must have looked in order for somebody like Lord Larsa to offer to escort him anywhere.

“I’m sorry.” he repeated again in a hushed voice. He didn’t want to be the cause of Lord Larsa’s death, simply because he was inept in battle. Lord Larsa had training and experience behind him. He had a few successful hunts, and a few lucky shots when his life was on the line. He wasn’t a warrior.

As the boy reached out and took the potion, Larsa watched him and could almost sense the discomfort radiating from him. Hmm...it was a shame that people's minds were so invested in a caste system—he was a person, just like them, he just happened to be born in the Solidor line and managed to survive his brother. He just wished for once people would see him as another person.

However, when the other finally gave his name, Larsa gave a smile. Max. That was a nice name. Simple, unassuming. He liked it. The handshake, however, left something to be desired, because Max still seemed nervous and only shook his hand briefly. Had they been in the court, it would have been seen as a bit rude. But Larsa knew Max wasn't certain about what to do. He just didn't understand why many people in Old Archades could accept his kindness and talk to him like a friend instead of their Emperor, but Max couldn't.

...Oh well.

“It's quite alright. Until you stop calling me 'Lord Larsa', I'll just have to call you 'Friend Max'. Does that seem fair?” A twinkle of amusement caught in his grey eyes, and he tilted his head to listen to Max's next words. Wouldn't be of any use? It didn't matter if he was 'useful'--companions were always nice on the road. Besides, without proper instruction Max would never grow in the art of defense. Perhaps they could help each other.

Rising to his feet, Larsa gave patted the dust off his clothes before smiling and offering his hand to Max. His smile was meant to be reassuring—he wanted the other to stop being so nervous.

“Come, Friend Max. I'm heading to Jahara. If you have nowhere else to be, you can at least escort me and rest until morning. If by that time you still don't want to accept me as a friend, then so be it. But I would appreciate a bit of companionship on my way to Healen Lodge.”

’Friend Max’? That’s a new one. He didn’t know what to make of the young Lord. His kindness was legendary in Archades, but Max still didn’t expect to receive this sort of attention from Lord Larsa. He stared at the other boy in confusion as he stood up, brushing off his clothing to get rid of dust and dirt. He knew he should stand, himself, but he couldn’t force his body to move. It wasn’t due to the aches and fatigue anymore, but more the sheer shock of being in the presence of royalty.

Green eyes flicked upwards when the hand was offered to him. He found a warm smile on Lord Larsa’s face, but he didn’t know how to respond. Should I take it? It’s not proper... Max listened as Lord Larsa mentioned heading towards Jahara, ironically the same settlement he was heading towards, but the boy seemed a little sad at Max’s hesitance. Or maybe that was just his own interpretation of the tone and expression. I’ve never heard of Healen Lodge.

Finally deciding to go along with Lord Larsa’s offerings, he tentatively reached out and clasped the warm hand with his own. He didn’t use it for leverage, though, instead pushing off of the ground with his free hand and scrambling to his feet. He released the Lord’s hand and started to brush himself off in a similar fashion. “Um...I can come with you. I don’t really have any other plans...” Just a few marks to attempt to kill...but I’ll need rest before I try the next one. “I will come.”

He had never actually been to Jahara before, only heard stories about the Garif. Max had to admit that he was intrigued about them, and he offered Lord Larsa a tiny smile. He set off at a slow pace towards the settlement, not really knowing what to expect either from the other boy or from the unknown race. “What...are you heading to Jahara for, my Lord?” he asked quietly. It was bold of him to ask, and he looked away shyly. He realized he had added the title in again, but he wasn’t sure he would actually be able to break the habit. “You don’t have to tell me. It’s your business. But...I...was just...curious.” he trailed off lamely. His face was flaming red again in embarrassment. He was never going to make it to Jahara at this rate. Not at Lord Larsa’s side.

Max ran a nervous hand through his hair, and felt his headband pushed off to the side. Straightening the black fabric out, he shot another quick glance sideways. He felt incredibly confused about the current turn of events, but he knew he couldn’t offend the important Archadian any more. His missteps had been forgiven so far, and Lord Larsa genuinely seemed to simply want a traveling companion, but Max was the wrong person for that. He couldn’t protect himself, let alone the young Emperor. But...leaving him to go off alone seemed like an even worse decision. Maybe he could at least buy enough time for Lord Larsa to escape if it came down to it. Yes, I will stay with him. At least for now.

That title came tumbling from Max's lips again, and Larsa let out a little sigh. It was okay, it might take some getting used to. Most Archadians were engrained with the idea that he wasn't like them and was required to receive a special treatment. But no, deep down, Larsa believed he WAS like everyone else. His family was only elected by choice of the people and Senate. His rule was because of the people.

Why couldn't more people understand that?

When Max curled up, however, and muttered about not being of any use though, the Emperor couldn't help but give a soft, understanding smile. He held out a gloved hand for Max to take, offering support. “All growth comes with time and effort. Who's to say I wouldn't be able to assist you?”

And Larsa wasn't looking for him to be of use; he just wanted to make sure the other was alright. And perhaps help him back to Archades. It certainly seemed that his spirits were dampened by the failed hunt...

But perhaps travel was what he needed to get him back on his feet again.

“Come, Max; Jahara isn't far off, and you can rest there. Far too many dangerous creatures lurking about to sit in the dirt.”
