She wears a brown turtle neck top underneath a white military uniform. On her left shoulder she wears the green spaldron that displays her rank as sergeant in the guardian corps. On her lower half she wears a brown mini skirt underneath which she wears black shorts. She has a naval piercing that is often obscured by her clothing. She wears a pouch on her left leg and knee high boots. She also wears a red cape that hangs from her left shoulder and a gunblade pouch behind her legs that is attached to her skirt. On her hands she wears fingerless gloved with metal plates over her knuckles. On her right arm she wears two armlets over her bicep and on her left a long black sleeve. Around her neck she wears a necklace with a lightning charm.
Personality:
Lightning is a quiet, coolheaded person. She's outwardly a strong, confident and very independent person. She can motivate herself with astounding determination. She also shows a rather short fuse and is easily irritated with outbursts of anger sometimes manifested in violence. She is very protective of her sister and defends her fiercely. She has a softer kind-hearted side to her that tends to get hidden away - a gentle, almost fragile side to her personality.
History:
Lightning was born and raised in Bodhum where she tragically lost her parents to illness at the age of fifteen. It was her responsibility then to raise her little sister, Serah. The sudden weight of responsibility forced her to grow up all at once and in an attempt to cast aside her childhood she changed her name to Lightning. She acted as a mother figure to her sister from then on. Years of over protectiveness later, Serah announced her engagement to Snow to her sister. Lightning’s reaction was one of obvious disapproval born from her very protective feelings for her little sister. To her mind it seemed that Snow was good for nothing but causing trouble and so she scorned the idea. She also reacted badly to being informed that Serah had been made a Pulse l'cie and initially refused to believe it, thinking it was some stupid way to bring her round to the idea of their engagement. It wasn’t until after opening the gift and finding the survival knife Serah had given her for her twenty-first birthday that she realised that her sister had been sincere and that she was in fact a l’cie. It wasn’t long before he discovered it was too late to do anything for Serah in Bodhum and that she had become trapped within the vestige of the Fal'cie, Anima. Without hesitation she boarded a purge train heading for the Hanging Edge with the intention of saving her sister. On board she freed herself and the other victims of the purge and soon found herself working with a man named Sazh. Together they fought their way through the Hanging Edge and eventually made it inside the vestige.
Serah turned to crystal before the newly assembled group of Lightning, Sazh, Snow, Hope and Vanille – a group that had all been thrown together by the events of the purge. Seeing Serah achieve crystal stasis provoked an angry reaction from Lightning. She blamed Snow before heading off to destroy the Fal'cie in her rage, seeking revenge, under the assumption that her sister was dead. The mish mash group found themselves fighting with her to survive and subsequently they were all turned to l’cie by. The destruction of Anima caused the group fall to lake Bresha and left them struggling with the shared vision in an attempt to figure out their focus. Snow's resolve to fulfil his focus irked Lightning who couldn't understand why he would do the bidding of the creature that turned Serah to crystal. After much searching they find the crystal statue of her sister and reluctantly, Lightning accepts her sister’s fate and is prepared to leave and escape the trap that the Sanctum was closing around them. Snow's subsequent outburst resulted in another violent reaction from Lightning who punched him right off of his feet. They then split up, with Lightning's anger with Snow plainly evident. They eventually escaped Lake Bresha in an airship but soon after crashed in the Vile Peaks.
Whilst in the Vile Peaks Lightning resolved to destroy the Fal'Cie, Eden, in an attempt to rid cocoon of the influence of the Fal'cie. Once more, the group split, this time Hope left with Lightning whereas Sazh and Vanille stayed together. As they travelled through the area that was simply teaming with monsters, pulsework creatures and PSICOM troops, Lightning became frustrated with Hope's struggling attempt to keep up with her pace. Those feelings of frustration finally overwhelmed her and in an otherworldly experience she found herself confronted with the Eidolon, Odin. A battle ensued in which she, with Hope’s assistance, caused the being to yield to her will and thus became able to summon him and have him to transform into the horse, Sliepnir for a gestalt attacks. Following the fight she apologized to Hope and decided to take him under her wing and toughen him up for the trials she could feel lay ahead.
They pressed on to the Grapa White Woods were Lightning allowed Hope to take the lead after his assurance that he could handle it, seeing it as the first step towards helping him grow stronger. After some time she decided to give him the survival knife gifted to her by Serah to boost his confidence. As they progressed Lightning asked him what is bothering him as his dark thoughts were practically palpable and, after a little pressing, discovered that Hope was blaming Snow for his mother’s death. To try and relieve him of his despair she helped him form a plan which he named Operation Nora. Unwittingly she had pushed him to plan revenge against Snow and when she realised this she attempted to explain the truth of the matter; that the Sanctum killed his mother, but he refused to accept it. Lightning was wracked with guilt for causing this and eventually managed to encourage Hope to return to his home town and speak to his father.
The pair journeyed on to Palumpolum where Sanctum troops forced them to travel through tunnels to the Fal'cie Carbuncle. It was there, staring at the creature responsible for feeding Cocoon’s people, that she had a revelation, realising that her whole life was spent as a pawn to the Fal'cie - long before she was made a l'cie. She understood that she didn’t know what to do without something to follow; that all her fighting and her aims to destroy Eden were just ways to try and regain the security she had had before Serah became a l'cie and also to turn away from the reality she found herself facing. She explained this to Hope and asked him to forget about Operation Nora, reassuring him that she would not abandon him. The discussion that followed stirred thoughts of Serah and Snow within Lightning just as it stirred thoughts of Hope's mother within him. His anger with Snow was still apparent as he went on to urge Lightning to stop using his name. Lightning and Hope made their way to the surface together with Lightning feeling more and more protective over the boy, feeling almost as she did with Serah. They were soon reunited with Snow and introduced to Fang for the first time when they were attacked by PSICOM troops. Lightning fought to defend Hope and eventually had to leave him in Snow's care before splitting off with Fang and escaping into back alleys. She attempted to warn Snow of Hopes feelings towards him and explain about his mother but she found herself speaking to Hope via Fang's wireless communication headset. Hope informed her of his intentions to continue with operation Nora before being cut off by distortion on the line. She turned her attention to Fang and subsequently learned of her origins in Gran Pulse as well as her connection to Vanille. As the two travelled to the rendezvous point at Hope's father's apartment, Lightning worried constantly about Hope and Snow. She also had concerns about having no plan and nothing to fight for and shared chose to share that anxiety with Fang as they continued on their route.
Eventually they were reunited with Hope and Snow where Lightning learned simply that Operation Nora "Didn't work out" and is given her knife once more. In a rare display of physical affection, she hugged Hope - a testament to how much she had grown to care for him before then carrying the wounded Snow back to the house. She explained to the bedridden Snow why she didn't believe Serah - that it was all too much to bare before seeking his forgiveness. When he told her that they would be even if she told him her name she instructed him to simply ask Serah when they got her back. They didn't have much time to come up with a plan before the house fell under attack from PSICOM troops. Things looked desperate and they were clearly outnumbered until the Cavalry arrived to save them, getting them all aboard the Lindblum.
On the huge airship they learned that Vanille and Sazh had been captured and were aboard the Palamecia. Although Lightning believed it to be a trap to draw them out they headed out to rescue their friends anyway. After fighting their way through the Palamecia and being reunited with Sazh and Vanille the group went on to confront the Primach Dysley who revealed himself as the Fal'cie Barthandelus. He went on to demand that one the l’cie group becomes the creature Ragnarok and destroys Orphan - the source of all power in Cocoon and subsequently revealed Serah's true focus which shocked the group, but in particular affected Snow very badly. After fighting Barthandelus they reached the fifth arc were Lightning made an effort to console Snow showing that she was coming round to him and his hopeless optimism.
Eventually the group wound up on Gran Pulse where Lightning found herself trying to console the despairing Hope and, just as he had aided her in Vile Peaks, she helped him defeat the eidolon he inadvertently summoned. It was on Gran Pulse that Lightning finally accepted Snow as her sister's future husband. When confronted by Serah in Oerba confusion was felt by the group collectively and Lightning was almost prepared to draw her weapon after being addressed by her real name. Within minutes the disguised Barthandelus had dropped the illusion and a difficult battle followed.
They wound up back on Cocoon to find Eden being overrun with monsters from Pulse. Lightning encouraged her companions to press on and show everyone how human they still were by saving Cocoon from Orphan which they did by battling their way through Eden. When they finally confronted Orphan; Lightning, Snow, Sazh and Hope attempted to stop Fang from becoming Ragnarok but were resisted and cast aside when Fang failed in her attempt to destroy Orphan. As a result each of them was turned into Cieth. Whilst in that form they relived all of their experiences before finally returning to their human forms with all of their confidence returned. After the hardest combat of their lives they were successful in destroying Orphan. They group could only watch as Fang and Vanille became Ragnarok together and saved Cocoon from crashing into Pulse and being destroyed. They all turned to Crystal on Gran Pulse, with Fang and Vanille forming the pillar of crystal that supported Cocoon in the sky. The remaining four were roused from their crystal stasis by Vanille's encouragement and awoke to find Serah and Dajh approaching.
As the people of Cocoon began a monumental effort to settle Gran Pulse the l’cie group learned that a large number of people had still been killed in the fall and that Bodhum had been completely destroyed. Although it was deemed better for them to remain out of sight until the truth of their actions could be spread amongst the people they all did what they could to help. Sazh offered up his skills as a pilot, Serah decided that she would become a teacher. Hope knew he would find a way to help however he could. Snow and Lightning decided that they would continue to protect Cocoon and she decided then and there to rejoin the Guardian Corps . She would do everything within her power to protect the sacrifice that Vanille and Fang had made to save a world that wasn’t even their own. She also gave Snow and Serah her blessing to marry, glad that they would find happiness with each other.
In wake of the merge Lightning has been very concerned with events: talk of monsters attacking cities and rumours of evils worse than the Fal’Cie, not to mention the fact that she has retained the ability to call forth her crystal and summon Odin as well as use magic. Although she has been tempted to go alone and investigate she chose instead to remain within the ranks of the Guardian Corps and doing her best to guide their assistance throughout the merged world where she has the authority to do so, always keeping an eye open to any details that might threaten everything she’s worked so hard to protect.
