I, too, will challenge my fate.
Name: Cid Raines
Nicknames/Alias: Brigadier General of the Guardian Corps Wide-area Response Brigade (also known as the Cavalry)
FF: FFXIII
Age: Somewhere in his early- to mid-twenties
Height/build: 6'6"/thin
DoB: Unknown
Weapon: Raines is capable of using several different weapons, notably both blades and guns. When he fights, however, it is primarily with hand-to-hand combat, unless another weapon is readily available for his use.
Level: 68
Strength: 204
Physical: 109 Magical: 42 Agility: 53
Special Skill(s): Raines is highly skilled in combat, having trained extensively to reach his rank in the Guardian Corps. His hand-to-hand prowess, in particular, is to be noted; he can easily take on an armed enemy without ever lifting a blade himself.
Magic: Though he was once a l'Cie, all of his magical ability has left along with his brand. He still has access to military-use manadrives, however, and keeps a small stock of them in case of emergency, particularly of the healing types.
Summon: None
Appearance: Cid Raines is a tall man of commanding presence. His dark hair falls close to chin length, with long bangs accenting his bright grey eyes. He wears the uniform of a man of his station, an elaborate, primarily white robe trimmed in silver, with a dual-layer cape attaching to pauldrons at his shoulders which bear two lighted blue stripes as marks of his rank. A pair of white gloves cover his hands. Overall he has a proud, noble bearing befitting a leader, evident not only in his physical attributes but in his mannerisms and attitude as well.
Personality: A man of strong will and unyielding drive, Raines is more than a capable leader, but also a well-liked and trusted ally among his troops. He works tirelessly toward his goals, no matter how high the odds are against him, remaining firmly true to them and to himself despite whatever adversity he is faced with. His sense of what is right is unmatched, and this he holds in the highest regard, allowing it to drive his actions above all else.
History: A man naturally gifted with leadership and intelligence, Raines entered the Guardian Corps young, and was quick to ascend the ranks. What he desired above all as he proved himself in one way after another was change, and toward this goal he worked tirelessly - an end to the Sanctum, to fal'Cie rule, and a chance for humans to take their own leadership, free of the interference of the beings which governed every aspect of their prosperity. This dream was a dangerous one, and so he shared it only with those he trusted the most: his personal troops, the Cavalry, a band of men and women as dedicated to his cause as he was.
And as he ascended to the rank of Brigadier General, formally taking command of the band of soldiers and finally attaining the power to make the change he so desired, change did come. But it was not the dream he had worked toward for so many years that he saw realized. Galenth Dysley, Primarch of the Sanctum, took notice of Raines, and in his calculating mind, found him to be an ideal puppet. Revealing himself as the fal'Cie Barthandelus, he branded Raines as a l'Cie, firmly ending his dreams then and there, and setting him on a path that would push Cocoon toward its destruction, all for his own selfish ends.
Raines was suddenly powerless. For a time, he had no choice but to live on the fal'Cie leash, ever guiding things as his Focus dictated, pressing the small band of l'Cie branded by Anima forward and advancing Barthandelus' ends. He hid the change that had come over him from even those closest to him, keeping up pretense and covering his brand, but secretly he loathed that he had become a tool of those who he had, for so long, dreamed of watching fall.
Finally he would have no more of it. Damning his Focus and his branded status, he turned against the l'Cie, choosing finally to do what he believed in and to fight the fal'Cie, one more time. He revealed to them Barthandelus' plan of bringing down Cocoon to call back the Maker, and then fought them, seeking to end their Focuses and save Cocoon, despite the cost. His strong feelings for his cause allowed him a unique power, and briefly he became a hybrid of Cie'th and l'Cie; however, his battle was fought in vain, and upon his fall, he turned to crystal - not for fulfilling the Focus that chained him, but for staying true to his human dreams.
This, however, was not the end of his burden. Barthandelus revived him as a puppet and placed him in the seat of Primarch, seeking to turn the Cavalry against him by making him appear a traitor. With no choice but to comply, he played his role well, until finally the fal'Cie's plan came to success. Confronted by Rygdea, his second-in-command who saw him as no more than a liar who had thrown away everything they had worked for and turned his back on them, he made the only request left to him as a human: to end his dream, which had become no more than a fal'Cie's fancy.
And with a bullet, Rygdea complied. Raines died, never getting the chance to see the world free of fal'Cie rule.
But then the Merge happened, and like so many others, suddenly he wasn't dead. When Raines awoke it was in an unfamiliar place, his brand gone and the world wholly changed. The fal'Cie remained, he soon learned, but their power over Cocoon was broken. Resuming his old life was not as simple as it may have seemed, however - without the Cavalry under his command and with his only goal fulfilled, his only option was to pick up what few pieces remained and to try to find something new to make with them.
Not an easy task, in a world he still doesn't know.
